MIDI is an
acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It's the Holy
Grail for musicians. I'm not sure what we would do without it
now. Below, is a very simplified diagram of how the PC is
connected to the sound modules. Basically, the software running
on the computer sends a stream of 'note on' and 'note off' messages
to each of the sound modules through a MIDI cable which carries 16
channels. Assigned to each channel, can be a program number
which tells the module which channel to listen to (1 to 16) and also,
what voice to activate. This is a very over simplified
explanation of the subject, and it needs a whole book to itself
. A good one to read, would be 'The MIDI Manual' by David Miles
Huber, and published by Sams. It's an excellent read, and I use
it as a reference manual.
Below is a
simplified version of the MIDI circuit of my studio.
